Huge box, tiny charger

I got my replacement iPhone charger under the recall program for the originals. Oh yeah, and it comes with a nice notice saying you'll be billed $29 if you don't return the original.

Five to ten days of downtime

This is from the AT&T Wireless website:

Your myWireless account will be undergoing scheduled maintenance from 10/2/2008 at 10pm (EDT) until 10/12/2008 at 11pm (EDT). During this time you may be able to access your myWireless account; however payment and balance information will not be updated until 10/7/2008 at 11pm (EDT) and unbilled usage may not be updated until 10/12/2008 at 11pm (EDT).

It takes them 5-10 days to do maintenance on a production system. Very impressive. (AT&T sucks.)

Rant on Bailout Bullshit

Greenspan and the GLBA the mortgage crisis was created. Greenspan's interest rate cutting was idiotic. Bernanke is a banker-loving asshole. The banks should fail even if it means letting idiots who bought homes they can't afford get a free ride. However, if the banks are bailed -- which will happen sadly -- every damn executive of the banks should be jailed for life along with all the assholes who sold these bullshit mortgage backed derivatives.

BTW: Rep. Kaptur, D. Ohio, is probably one of the coolest people in Washington right now:

Experian doesn't make fraud alerts easy

TransUnion lets you file a fraud alert online easily and forwards the information to Equifax and Experian. Equifax I never heard anything from. Experian sent me a letter requesting a copy of my driver's license with current address, proof of my SSN and other stuff. They do not make it easy to file a fraud alert at all.

Yay for credit card rewards

Dell Latitude D830 Nvidia Quadro 140M Drivers with Linux (Ubuntu Hardy)

The package with Hardy for the nvidia drivers doesn't actually work. I really wanted graphics acceleration so I decided to download the Nvidia drivers from their site.

Use Google and just go to Drivers, Linux, and pick IA32 or IA64. Download the driver (a .run) file to your home directory.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F2

Execute the commands:
sudo killall -9 gdm
sudo killall -9 Xorg
cd ~
sh N*run
Follow the instructions and all is wonderful. :)

I use full disk encryption with Xubuntu. Adding one line to /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions makes life so much easier. Now I know for sure which partition I'm being prompted to unlock.
